Ideas Need Time To Grow: How Starting My First Podcast Led Me To Social Justice Origin Stories

”I continue to consider myself an aspiring humanitarian in the ways that I talked about. I think about history, I think about the present, I think about the future. Dehumanization is horrible when we are on the receiving end, and also from our places of privilege, insulation, protection, there’s another kind of dehumanization that happens in the disconnection it takes to ignore or comply with the oppression of others.

So it’s about trying to get closer to freedom for me. It’s about owning our contradictions, reconciling what we can, and joining in with others along the way. As we try to impact the world outside of ourselves, we have to continue to engage in critical self- and systems reflection.”

–Relando Thompkins-Jones

Sometimes, reflecting on the past helps us move forward. Social Justice Origin Stories is an idea whose time has come, but there was a podcast before the podcast, a platform before the platform.

In today’s episode of Design Decisions, I’m reflecting on the experiences that led me to create my very first podcast, Notes From an Aspiring Humanitarian, and how that journey laid the groundwork for my work with Social Justice Origin Stories.

I'm a macro social worker, social justice educator, strategist, and storyteller who leverages media and education to advance equity and social justice within people, organizations, and communities. I started Social Justice Origin Stories because I believe in the power of storytelling and making our experiences accessible to others, because I believe in the liberatory effects of social justice education, to support justice-seekers in finding community and feeling less alone given the relentlessness of oppressive systems, and to be a resource of support and reflection for those who are thinking through how they could best contribute to the work. We need all who can, to do what they can.
